Configuring the Ether-channel in open v-switch in GNS3 working environment

Real-world scenario

A company has different vendor switches like Cisco, Mikrotik, UBNT, Maipu and so on.... they run servers, one switch connected to another switch, up to depends on the capacity, but different ports are bundle in the cable environment!!! Imagine once... So you are working in a company; it's the choice to do the work as admin... what do you do...? This is the solution for this query...
That is the thought of ether-channel.

EtherChannel is a networking technology used to combine multiple physical Ethernet links between two network devices into a single logical link called a Port-Channel.

It provides increased bandwidth, link redundancy, and improved network availability. If one physical link fails, the remaining links in the EtherChannel can continue forwarding traffic.

EtherChannel can be configured using protocols such as LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol) or PAgP (Port Aggregation Protocol). LACP is widely used because it is an open IEEE standard.

Why do we use EtherChannel?

There are mainly three reasons:

1. Increased bandwidth

Suppose we have four 1-Gbps interfaces:

1 Gbps + 1 Gbps + 1 Gbps + 1 Gbps
             ↓
       4 Gbps aggregate

2. Redundancy

Imagine four links are connected between two switches.

If one cable fails:

Gi0/1 → UP
Gi0/2 → UP
Gi0/3 → DOWN ❌
Gi0/4 → UP

3. Avoiding STP blocking of individual bundled links

Without EtherChannel, connecting multiple parallel Layer-2 links can create a Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) loop.

STP may block some individual links. With EtherChannel, the bundled links are presented to STP as one logical interface,

so STP can treat the Port-Channel as a single path.

EtherChannel protocols

There are three common modes/concepts you should know.

Protocol/ModeDescription
LACP    IEEE standard, commonly used
PAgP    Cisco proprietary
Static / On    EtherChannel configured without negotiation

What is open V switch (OVS)

Open vSwitch (OVS) is an open-source, multilayer virtual switch designed primarily for
virtualized and cloud environments. It provides network connectivity between virtual machines,
containers, physical network interfaces, and other virtual networking components.

Now we configure the ether-channel on Open vSwitch(OVS) . Here see the below network diagram.

Configuration:

   OVS-1

For Creating the ether-channel configuration On OVS-1
         ovs-vsctl add-bond br0 bond0 eth12 eth13 eth14 eth15
    ovs-vsctl set port bond0 lacp=active     ovs-vsctl set port bond0 bond_mode=balance-tcp

    For Trunk ports allowed vlans..

        ovs-vsctl set port bond0 trunks=10,20

Assigning the bridge to VPCS ports on the topology diagram.

    ovs-vsctl add-port br0 eth0
    ovs-vsctl add-port br0 eth1     ovs-vsctl add-port br0 eth2     ovs-vsctl add-port br0 eth3

For Tagging Vlans to that ports

    ovs-vsctl set port eth0 tag=10
    ovs-vsctl set port eth1 tag=10     ovs-vsctl set port eth2 tag=20     ovs-vsctl set port eth3 tag=20

    OVS-2

    ovs-vsctl add-bond br0 bond0 eth12 eth13 eth14 eth15
   ovs-vsctl set port bond0 lacp=active    ovs-vsctl set port bond0 bond_mode=balance-tcp

    ovs-vsctl set port bond0 trunks=10,20

    ovs-vsctl add-port br0 eth0
    ovs-vsctl add-port br0 eth1     ovs-vsctl add-port br0 eth2     ovs-vsctl add-port br0 eth3

    ovs-vsctl set port eth0 tag=10
    ovs-vsctl set port eth1 tag=10     ovs-vsctl set port eth2 tag=20     ovs-vsctl set port eth3 tag=20

But in the video i recorded forgot the one port on OVS..

for Verification check list...

Verify On both OVS switches:

sudo ovs-vsctl show

Check the trunk:

sudo ovs-vsctl get port bond0 trunks

Check LACP:

sudo ovs-appctl lacp/show bond0

Check the bond:

sudo ovs-appctl bond/show bond0

FOR PC

VPCS1: ip 192.168.10.10/24
VPCS2: ip 192.168.10.20/24
VPCS5: ip 192.168.10.50/24

VPCS6: ip 192.168.10.60/24

VPCS3: 192.168.20.30/24
VPCS5: 192.168.20.50/24
